My why (by Brian the Skinny Fat Guy)

Hi there and welcome!

I’m Brian and I started this blog in October 2023 with hopes of motivating the masses of other skinny fat people by showing that it’s never too late to break free from your skinny fat body and gain the toned muscular physique you deserve.

As you can see in the embarrassing photo at the top of this page, I’m not a fitness guru, personal trainer, health expert. I’m not even particularly passionate about fitness, just a typical old skinny fat guy. I gradually outgrew my – just plain skinny – shell through my thirties, forties and fifties only to develop a pot belly, flabby torso and of course the obligatory “moobs”. Even now at almost 60 years of age I still haven’t quite managed to get into the hugely overweight club, as my bony shoulders, knees, shins etc. are testament to.

If you were being quite diplomatic, you could say that my body lacks definition. Besides that my energy levels are frustratingly low and ill health is but a sneeze away most of the time. I feel like I’m moving around in slow-motion some days. So now, at almost sixty years of age I’ve made up my mind not to let the old man in.

Time for Change – On My Terms

Perhaps like me until now, you’ve been getting your quota of skinny fat guy exercise by thumbing through the social feeds and YouTube channels on your phone whilst drinking coffee and scoffing all manner of confectionery delights. Maybe you’ve also stumbled across the perfectly chiseled fitness influencers who have very probably been in the gym pumping Iron and abusing various bovine enhancers since they first had pocket-money. I can’t believe these gurus were ever skinny fat or even remotely out of shape for any part of their adult life.

Rather than invest my money on a course or monthly membership run by a thirty-something social media star or an older, professional body builder, I wanted to find my own way to a fitter, healthier me.

My Great Big Skinny Fat List

I’ve also got a wish list that suits my situation and personality and doesn’t overstep the lifestyle changes I’m willing to make. Here are my top 10:

  • Must not starve myself or be tied to a bland and overly restrictive diet.
  • Can be done at home.
  • No gym equipment needed.
  • No running or mind-numbing cardio activities
  • Not too time consuming
  • Visible results in a short period of time.
  • No more than 1 hour per day maximum.
  • Incorporates short sessions.
  • Varies from day to day.
  • Rest days and treats every week.

The Master Plan

I’m a big believer in HIIT workouts. HIIT stands for high-intensity interval training, and it’s a type of workout that involves short bursts of high-intensity exercise followed by brief periods of rest. HIIT workouts are very effective for burning fat and building muscle, and they can be done in a short amount of time.

Being in this skinny fat predicament, I need to be careful with how I manage my weight and as you may have gathered, I’m also massively into being able to use carb cycling as a way to let me have my cake &…. biscuits, spaghetti, pizza, sushi. You get the idea, right? All in controlled quantities obviously!

I’m going to be posting regular blog posts about my HIIT workouts, as well as tips and advice on how to get the most out of your HIIT workouts. I’m also going to be sharing my progress with you and keeping you updated on my fitness journey.

I hope you’ll join me so we can inspire each other along the way!
